What’s a song that changed your life?

Songs (or books or movies or people) can’t change your life. Only you can change your life. But maybe I’m taking it too literally. If you’re using “changed my life” loosely to mean “had a strong impact on me” then I guess I’d have to say:

Take a Look Around

by Limp Bizkit

I’ve surprised myself by choosing this song. Limp Bizkit isn’t one of my favorite bands or anything. But when I was in college, in 2004, a friend of mine had a cassette of Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water album. Another friend of mine had a Sony Walkman. I had night duty and I listened to this album over and over again to pass the time.

Then later I formed a band with my friends and this was one of the songs that we played. And in my opinion this was the one we rocked the most. I remember the lyrics even now and sometimes I imagine going on a podcast as a philosopher and the host asks me “so what is the meaning of life” and I say:

“Life’s just a blast, that’s moving really fast, you better stay on top or life will kick you in the ass!”

or,

“Life is a lesson; you’ll learn it when you’re through.”

And when the host looks at me weirdly, I say, “Now I know why you wanna hate me.”

I don’t know. That’s my answer. Great riff, great song. Made an impact in my life, I guess.
